Natura 2000 is a European network of “Community Interest Sites”, create for the protection and conservation of habitat and animal and vegetable species that have been identified as priority by the States of the European Union
Because of the exceptional fauna and flora they host, the Natura 2000 sites are extremely valuable natural habitats. Protected areas are set up within the framework of the “Habitat” Directive, which also includes the areas designated under the “Birds” Directive.
The network’s objective is the preservation of species and habitats that characterise the sites, keeping the economic, social and cultural needs of the region in mind, within a sustainable development framework. It aims at guaranteeing the long-term survival of these habitats and species, playing a key role in the protection of biodiversity in the territory of the European Union.
